Mowing machinery and migratory sheep herds are complementary dispersal vectors for grassland species

چکیده
Aim We assessed the role of mowing machinery and endozoochory by migratory sheep as dispersal vectors in semi-natural grasslands comparing species compositions traits found to regional above-ground vegetation soil seed bank. Furthermore, we discuss how their interplay may affect conservation grasslands. Location Rhön Mountains, central Europe. Methods Plant material from mowers (n = 12 one date) dung samples 39 13 dates) were collected dispersed plant determined using emergence method. compared bank non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) indicator analysis. functional non-dispersed pools calculating log-response ratios performing metaregressions. Results While 43 shared between vectors, differed each other. Mower more similar whereas Mowers favoured with different phenologies. Species small sizes prevalent both vectors. less selective concerning most traits, but high-growing grasses such Alopecurus pratensis Trisetum flavescens. Sheep contained palatable species, Urtica dioica. phenology, also included late-flowering species. Conclusion are complementary favouring differing traits. enables that have unfavourable (e.g. low releasing heights) or phenologies for machinery. To ensure a high number grasslands, should be considered.

One important area for which little experimental evidence is available is the snowgrass country. There is a strong body of opinion that in the snowgrass the combined effects of fire and grazing have been responsible for deterioration in vegetative cover and stability. It seems likely that changes in the boundari~s between the snowgrass and fescue communiti~s have been due to, or aggravated by, ...
متن کاملDynamic conservation for migratory species
In an era of unprecedented and rapid global change, dynamic conservation strategies that tailor the delivery of habitat to when and where it is most needed can be critical for the persistence of species, especially those with diverse and dispersed habitat requirements. We demonstrate the effectiveness of such a strategy for migratory waterbirds. We analyzed citizen science and satellite data to...
متن کاملOverseas seed dispersal by migratory birds.
Long-distance dispersal (LDD) promotes the colonization of isolated and remote habitats, and thus it has been proposed as a mechanism for explaining the distributions of many species. Birds are key LDD vectors for many sessile organisms such as plants, yet LDD beyond local and regional scales has never been directly observed nor quantified. By sampling birds caught while in migratory flight by ...
